Living History

Time Travelers: Pioneer Days

Westward Ho! Climb aboard! We’re heading into the heart of the American frontier! In this immersive, story-driven adventure, students step into the worn leather boots of young pioneers making the courageous journey west in covered wagons. Experience life on the frontier through hands-on activities: setting up camp, learning pioneer chores, playing games from the past, and discovering what daily life was really like for families on the move. The adventure culminates in an exciting living history field trip at the

Bernhard Museum in Auburn, CA for Grades 2nd and up.

Homestead Kitchen
Step into a pioneer kitchen and learn how early settlers lived off the land! Students will make food from scratch, try simple recipes, preserve fruits and vegetables through canning, and explore the skills pioneers used to feed their families. Plant a mini garden, harvest ingredients, and enjoy hands-on cooking activities, like cooking over an open fire, that bring frontier life to the table.

Our day is intentionally designed in two parts, with each class building on and enhancing the other. This structure allows students to dive deeply into a topic from multiple angles. It promotes deep thinking, creating, experimenting, and exploring in ways that feel natural and exciting.

Mixed-Age Class Structure

At The Learning Grove, our classes are intentionally designed for mixed-age groups, typically Kindergarten through 5th Grade. 6th graders may be accepted on a case-by-case basis, especially if enrolling with a sibling in the same class.

This model encourages leadership, collaboration, and community. Older students mentor and model, while younger students learn by example, building empathy, confidence, and teamwork.

To support every child’s growth, our day includes age-based breakout sessions for developmentally appropriate instruction. This thoughtful structure ensures that all students are engaged, challenged, and inspired.

Is Your Child Ready To Participate In Our Program?

At The Learning Grove, we’re all about joyful learning, curiosity, and connection! To help your child get the most out of their experience, we ask that families take a moment to review the following readiness guidelines. We understand that some days are smoother than others (for little ones and big ones), but in general, students should be able to:

  • Be fully potty trained (including knowing when to go and managing toileting needs independently)

  • Wash hands and dress themselves with basic independence

  • Say goodbye to their grown-up and join in the fun

  • Show interest and willingness to participate in activities

  • Let us know if they need help or have a concern

  • Move from one activity to another with minimal support, even when things shift a little

  • Take part in group activities without needing constant one-on-one attention

  • Stay with the group and play safely without wandering off

  • Use the restroom, wash hands, and get dressed with independence

  • Work through challenges without using physical or hurtful language

We’re here to support each child’s growth with care and compassion and these guidelines help create a safe and positive space for everyone to learn and thrive together!
